Have you ever met someone who isn't related to you but acts like a mother and has a big impact on your life? "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd takes place in South Carolina in 1964. A 14-year-old named Lily lives with her abusive dad after she accidentally shot her mom when she was 4. She also lives with her housekeeper/nanny Rosaleen, who she runs away with. The reason she runs away is because she doesn't want to live with her abusive dad. When she runs away, she lives with August and her sisters, who used to know Lily's mom. This shows August telling T-Ray, Lily’s dad, that she can live with her for however long she wants. This also shows that August gave Lily a home when she didn’t want to go live with her abusive dad.
