In the novel The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd is about a white girl named Lily Owens who ran away at the age of twelve with Rosaleen her colored caretaker. When the two ran away they started over in there new town down in South Carolina. Something that was mentioned throughout the novel is how Lily wanted to be just like her mother because she is extremely curious about her. Lily’s mother died in a tragic accident when she was a kid so she was left with an abusive father, T-Ray. Lily found a bunch of things including pictures that helped her find her way to the Boatwrights house. The characters in the novel act like bees responding and respecting orders from the one queen bee, they all protect each other when under attack, and guide each other keeping themselves and their peers on track. August gave Lily a responsibility and trusted her with the job of being a beekeeper. Lily and her coworkers make the honey, sell it and than make money off of it. In the first passage it states “The whole fabric of honey bee society depends on communication- on an innate ability to send and receive messages, to encode and decode information”. One of Lily’s main reasons for traveling was to find out more about her mother. She was extremely determined to find out more about her so she asks August and she tells her everything. Giving Lily information about her mother is like when the bees give her honey. The bees are there to send, receive, and to watch Lily. Through the story Lily easily has one of the best bonds with the bees and it's because they protect her just like her
