High School. Mel has longish hair that is often greasy, usually has dark circles under her eyes has a chewed up lip which is mention numerous. She is an outcast. Does not have a place in High School nor fit in with any group. Her only friend Heather left her in the middle of the year so she can pursue her dream of finally being cool with the Martha's. All of Mel friends left her before entering high school because she busted a party, however, they don’t know that she was sexually assaulted at that party which was the reason why she called the police. Mel is just trying to graduate high school and forget about that night.

She also has greasy hair as mention here “I hook my hair behind my ears. I should have washed it”(120,Anderson). What Mel means here is that the dark circles under her eyes, her eyebrows are dark and like a straight line, and her nose fat because she compares it to a piggy nose. Her lips are so chewed up and bad that it is very painful and disgusting. She mention this multiple times through the book. She doesn’t think that highly of herself as mentioned by how she thinks of herself and her thoughts. “I’m sure I was a huge disappointment.I’m not pretty or smart or athletic. I’m just like them-- an ordinary drone dressed in secrets and lies”- (Anderson, 70). Mel thinks that she a disappointment to her parents. Like she messed up their lives. Mel thinks if it wasn’t for her, her parent would be split up by now. Then continue to things that since she not beautiful nor athletic that she is a disappointment in her parents lives. During Valentine Mel thought she got a message from a secret admirer but however, it was her old ex-friend, Heather, returning a friendship necklace. After she found this out she thought “How stupid could I be? I hear a cracking inside me, my ribs are collapsing in on my lungs,which is why I can’t breath.” (110Anderson).
