The Selection series is about the life of America Singer, a normal girl living in Carolina, 300 years in the future. America grew up in a fairly poor family, as she was in the fifth caste. The castes are different levels of society, based on wealth and jobs, one is the highest and most wealthy, and eight is the lowest and with the least amount of money. People are born into these based on what their parents are, and if you are a woman you are married off to a possible different caste.

America is sixteen in the book, so she receives her form to take part in The Selection, a competition for girls aged sixteen to eighteen to put their name into a draw to go to the palace to win the heart of Prince Maxon, get married, and someday become …show more content…

America ends up getting her name drawn, and went straight to the castle. When America arrived, she felt trapped and described the castle as a cage. She tried to go out to the garden but was told by the guards that she couldn’t go outside without direct permission from the prince. Prince Maxon could hear America yelling at the guards so he went downstairs to see what was going on. Maxon told the guards that it was okay to let her out because he was going out with her even though he wasn’t supposed to meet any of the girls until the next day. They ended up having a conversation about life before the Selection. This conversation finished as an argument and America kneeing Maxon in the stomach because America was talking about how unfair things were about the caste system and was blaming it all on Maxon. He keeps his promise to keep America at the castle, but for a different reason than why she asked him to. He was also falling in love with her, and had been since she got there. Their love progresses and Maxon finally confesses to America that he loves her. He tells her that if she ever changed her mind about just being friends and if she wanted to, he would end the competition right away and they would get married. America almost told him how she feels, but Aspen (her love from back home) came to the palace to be a guard. America, overwhelmed by her feelings for Aspen, and conflicted by her feelings for Maxon needs to make a decision. Americas brain is saying to stay with Maxon, because the girls from the Selection are pledged to Maxon until they go home and would be severely punished if they were to cheat on Maxon plus the growth of their relationship is great, but her heart is saying to go with Aspen because of their previous love back at
