In the passage from “The Sentimentality of William Tavener,” the events are placed in such an order that it grasps the reader’s attention through dialogue and later foreshadowing. The order of the dialogue between Hester and William has a strong impact on the way the reader views the characters, as well as the passage.

The passage starts out by giving a statement by Hester and then showing William’s reaction to this statement. For the first part of the passage, it is mainly Hester doing the talking. This is an important key to how the order of the passage had an impact on the reader’s views of this passage. With Hester being the main one to talk throughout the passage, this shows that Hester is the outgoing one in the relationship between Hester and William. She is more than likely the one that has something to say about everything.

Although Hester’s will to speak her own mind shows her personality and shows that she is the one to say the most between the two, I believe that William has the final say over what the boys can and can’t do. This delay in his answer, in my belief, is because the author is trying to make the passage more suspenseful. Because of the order that the passages events are set in, the conflict isn’t quiet resolved until the end. Not only that, but there are multiple conflicts in the passage. The passage starts out with Hester and William having different opinions on whether or not they should let the boys go to the circus. Later on in the passage, another conflict arises when William states that he was also at the circus that Hester had attended back when she was a child.
