Patricia Era Bath was born in Harlem, New York, on November 4, 1942. Her father was Rupert Bath, who had become the first African-American motorman for the New York City subway system. He had also been a former Merchant Marine, and also occasionally wrote newspaper columns.

The Unusual Message Reading the commencement speech “This is Water”, written and delivered by David Foster Wallace to students and their families at Kenyon College was nothing like what I was expecting it to be. I can imagine the listeners that were present were just as shocked as I was when they finally grasped the message he was presenting to them that day. Normally when someone delivers a commencement speech to students graduating, it's more along the lines of “be all that you can be” or “You can do it” with emphasis on the word “you.” No one really tells you to think of others first at that point in your lives. However, Wallace did just that.
A Frame Story is a story that takes place in the original story. There have been many examples of this such as in Frankenstein and The Canterbury Tales. This type of writing brings a different perspective into how the characters in the external story view the internal struggle. A perfect example of this is Raymond Carver’s short story “Everything Stuck to Him”. Carver’s choice of style, language, event sequencing, and setting impacted the meaning and development of the story.
The Wife of Bath and her tale are the most similar out of all the tales because they both share a domineering outlook over others. In the general prologue she is told to have had five husbands and is described as a looker, “Her face was bold and handsome and ruddy,” (Chaucer 39). In her prologue she goes more in depth of her time spent with her five husbands. Wife of Bath talks most about how she gains control over her husbands. For instance, her fifth husband was the controlling force in their marriage until he made the mistake of hitting her and telling her he would do anything to keep her with him and said, “My own true wife, do as you wish for the rest of your life…” (335).
Bathalt Academy had proven year after year without fail why it was one of the leading facilities in training new recruits. One was guaranteed to run into at least one graduate through the portal. Some of the brightest minds and strongest muscles had been trained there, from warriors wielding weapons twice their size to mages boasting an arsenal capable of wiping out a small city. There were many other facilities training new recruits, some just as prestigious, but none as well known. Out of the hundred or so students in each year, an estimated thirty percent were expected to graduate and proceed through the portal, of that thirty percent, sixty percent were estimated to survive, above average when compared to their closest competitors.

The story is about a family that is in deep distress following a car accident involving eight year old Scotty and how the family is managing to work through the accident and resulting injury.
The couple is grieving the death of their son, each in their own way, and find it hard to relate, while the couple from "Cathedral" struggles to relate in the wife 's relationship with the blind man and her desire to be understood. For this week's discussion, I’ve picked the short story called "The Bath" By Raymond Carver. The story is narrated from the third person perspective. The story starts with the mom at the bakery on a Saturday afternoon ordering a cake for her son Scotty’s 8th birthday on Monday. On the day of the boy’s birthday, the boy was going to school when he gets hit by a car; he gets up and heads back home to tell his mother about the accident. At home, the boy falls into a coma and he is taken to the hospital.
In the fourteen century, men were always the superior, head of the household, the breadwinner, but women were always inferior, they would stay at home, do the house work, cook, and never would have a job. Well, times have changed. Women are reaching an equal status to men in political, social and economic matters It’s part of the idea called Feminism. In many ways the Wife of Bath displays many characteristic of women in the 21st century. Instead of being directed by men, she views herself as an independent person.
Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own A Modern Look at Privilege In A Room of One’s Own (1929), Virginia Woolf explores how society’s treatment of men and women allow for different opportunity levels, and indeed, even today, we often find different groups separated by one classification or another. Often times, the group that is receiving the most benefits are not aware that they have an advantage over their counterparts, whether it be the opposite gender or socio-economic class. Today, we may not still have the gender difference as we did in Woolf’s time, but there is still much that can be learned from her essay.
