Today people are judged based on the color of their skin and on their physical appearance. In the United States, especially, people are judged based on their skin color and because of the way they look. Usually people care about appearance because they believe in stereotypes and are grouped in many different ways. A lot of people are discriminated against in many different ways; for example, police brutality, racial discrimination, and colorism to name a few. The groups who are usually judged a lot are Latinos and African-Americans and that is because of the color of their skin. Today, colorism continues because of different shades of skin color in many ethnic groups. Usually people do not wonder how dark Hispanics came in to the United States. The identity for Hispanics is multi-cultural, which means that they tend to be from different countries and all have similar or different feature from one another. Hispanics all around the world have light skinned Latinos and dark skinned Latinos because there culture has many mixtures from different parts of the world. Numerous Hispanics attach their hereditary nations of source which are: Mexico, Cuba, Peru, or Dominican Republic. They also may look like their indigenous roots that’s why some Hispanics have straight hair and light-brown skin tone. Afro-Latinos are one of many identity groups who portray the features of their ancestral background. Usually Afro-Latinos are portrayed as the people who see themselves differently among other ethnic groups. Usually these groups tend to make the Hispanic race question their identity a lot which becomes a social problem. Racial segregation makes people of color have major social economic differences because society wants to separate people of color from the wealthier people. The lack of attention that society has put on the differences of color in the Hispanic/Latino community, have affected colored people in the way they look and their skin color. There are a lot of people who believe that darker skin people have less value as a person than light skin people because of the way society sees them. As the Latino population eventually grows future wise, there should be mental help groups who can assist the Latino community when in need. The focus of the psychological literature helps the Latino community to identify their differences such as, where Latinos originated different cultures, and the stages of ethnic and racial self-identification. For example, “Although panethnic terms may have political relevance and often provide a sense of unity among individuals who have experienced a history of oppression, discrimination, and invisibility in the U.S., they also obscure within group differences” (Chavez & Dueñas, 2014). The panethnic term is served in the census to provide a feeling of satisfaction to Latino/Hispanic. The census provides multiple options with the addition of the Latino/Hispanic choice.
