Revolution, a tradition as old as time. Countries such as Haiti and America used the tactic of revolution to gain independence from their European overlords. The American Revolution occurred between 1775-1781 against England. As this revolution was ending, another one was started a little farther south; Haiti revolted against France from 1791 to 1803. These two revolutions draw many similarities such as the fact that they were both revolting against European powers but also draw differences because the Haitian revolutions’ driving force was their lower class and the American Revolution spurred by the upper class.
Though outnumbered, it is still important to acknowledge the differences in the revolutions. First off, their geographic locations differ with Haiti being a part of South America and the United States being a part of North America. This is easily exemplified by the fact that Haiti and the United States were revolting against large European powers, France and England respectively. As with any revolution, both of these states had a want for freedom greater than the monarchy they were placed under. As is most likely inferred, these revolutions were the causes of heaps of unresolved tensions. These tensions started off with the often unfair policing of their regions by their colonizers. Not only were these former colonies unhappy, but they were also being killed by France or England for their resistance. As the wars neared end, the patriots lost 25,000-70,000 soldiers while the Haitians lost 200,000. This is another similarity that both Nations share, the massive losses of lives during their revolutions. Lastly, and probably the most important similarity, both of these revolutions succeeded without suppression from the other
