This book was a detailed book about the life of Queen Elizabeth the first. Elizabeth had inherited an England that was completely in distress.There was a plethora of religious conflict, and England had just so happened to be at war with Spain and France, and had England was also in debt. All of these things where hounding at England as soon as Elizabeth I had inherited the throne. This caused for a lot of stress on Queen Elizabeth I. This novel was about the life of Elizabeth I and the challenges she had faced during her time as Queen of England. It is very descriptive and describes all the way from her childhood, and all the way up to her years as Queen. It is a great story to help you learn more about Queen Elizabeth I, and England during the time of her reign. The book starts of by talking about Elizabeth I’s childhood in the first of the five sections, called “Bastard.” She describes how she was declared a bastard at the age of three to the public due to her mother being disgraced and even executed publicly, she had her head cut off because it was the punishment for being accused of treason against King Henry VII, her husband, and Elizabeth I’s father. However later Elizabeth finds out that King Henry had been the one to attempt to kill her because he was angry at the failure to produce a male heir. He did this to many of his other wives too. The book describes how Elizabeth as a little girl was very close with her older sister Mary. She also had a younger brother named Edward. One of the things that Queen Elizabeth remembers through her childhood is going to one of her fathers weddings, he was marrying Maddam Porr. This is the only one of his weddings she had attended. She describes in the first page of this section, something along the lines of: “For now I was no longer “the Daughter of the King” but “the King’s Most Honored Sister,” and level with the throne. I think this section is called virgin because of how a lot of it talks about how Elizabeth isn’t only considered to be marriage-ready, but she is considered one one of the most valuable virgins in all of Europe. She is known as the virgin queen because she never married. In this section Elizabeth considered a lot about marriage. Edward ended up dying from being ill at only sixteen years old, despite all of the plots for him and sometimes even Elizabeth and Mary to be murdered so that the throne will be given to others. They where typically warned off these plots before they would happen. Shortly after the death of her brother, Mary was next in line for the throne. Mary ended up marrying a Spanish prince, and she was highly fascinated with religion. Because of this Mary started to attempt to restore Catholicism throughout all of England, but Elizabeth remained Protestant. When Mary was Queen her uneasy relationship with Elizabeth had caused her to put two people above her in the court, even though she was next in line for the throne, Mary claimed that Elizabeth’s illegitimate birth was her reason. This of course made Elizabeth mad, but
