The Strict Society What if the world based their society on Naturalism and nothing else? How strict would the rules for changing one’s fate be? In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, the characters live in a naturalist society that changes the way they live. Although the people may not like their life, it is difficult to change it during this time. The novel makes a naturalism argument about people trying to changes social classes, but society does not allow them to do so no matter how hard they try. Throughout the book, there are characters who try to rise from their social classes, but there is one from the new class who tries hard to become a part of the wealthy class. One character who really wanted to break the naturalistic views was Mr. Jay Gatsby. Gatsby had a car that was a “rich cream color, bright with nickel [...with] many layers of glass [and a] green leather conservatory” (Fitzgerald 64). Today’s society is very different than Naturalism, for it is ok for people in a lower class to rise up to the wealthy class. Most people do not care how much money another person has if they are in love, except for the few in the population. If the characters in the book were to live in today’s society, they would have all lived better lives because most of them would get what they wanted without getting punished. Today’s society seems to be less strict than naturalism and it seems to be better for everyone because it would be difficult for everyone to not try to change social classes. If the world had only focused on a naturalist society, people would be harsher on others when they try to break the naturalistic views.
