The Summer I Turned Pretty is a novel written by Jenny Han. The book is about a teenage girl, Belly. Every summer Belly and her family go to their summer home, which belongs to their very close family friends, the Fishers. Not only is Belly in love with her second home, but also with the boy she shares it with. Conrad is, and always has been the one for her, but every summer she has been running from her feelings. This summer is a big turning point for Belly and everyone that she cares about. The author proves that making decisions with your heart can be more dominant than you brain.

The book leads you to think that Susannah discretely bought the dress for Belly, but that isn't the case. Belly’s mom snuck back to the store and purchased the dress, because even though she didn't think that Belly needed the dress, and that she didn't even have enough money for it, she bought it. She bought it because making Belly happy was more important than any price tag or logistics. It is a very emotional scene for not only Belly, but for us as readers because at this point of the book the bond between readers and Belly is strong. It is early one morning and Belly notices that Conrad went for a beach run. Without thinking she instantly follows him like he was a magnet. When she catches up to him she realizes that she is at a loss of words. She thought of all of the things that she could say to him and after her mind is completely blank, she says what she has been holding back for years. “‘I've loved you since I was ten years old.’ He blinked. ‘You're the only boy I've ever thought about. My whole life, it's always been you. You taught me how to dance, you came out and got me that time I swam out too far. Do you remember that? You stayed with me and you pushed me back to shore, and the whole time, you kept saying, We’re almost there, and I believed it. I believed it because you were the one who was saying it, and I believed everything you ever said. Compared to you everyone else is saltines, even Cam. And I hate saltines. You know that. You know everything about me, even this, which is that I really love you.’” Belly went from not knowing what to say, to having all of her feelings pore out.
