The Lost Generation happened in the 1920’s after World War One and was a time when people were wandering and trying to seek approval and a different way of life. There were many different ways that people were able to signify that they were a part of The Lost Generation. Both men and women alike were a part of this era. In the novel, The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway uses Brett as a good example of what it looks like to be a part of The Lost Generation by the way she dresses, the way she intimately interacts with several guys, and how excessively she drinks, goes to the bar and smokes. At the beginning of the book Brett was married to a guy she met during the war which was referred to as her first love but ended up being killed on the battlefield. According to C. Whitworth, “Lady Brett Ashley and Jake Barnes: The New In-Crowd” “One could speculate that the reason for her needy emotional state stems from the loss of her first true love to dysentery in WWI” (para 4). In the beginning of the book, Robert decided to ask Brett to dance with him. However, Jake had already asked to her to dance with him right before Robert and Brett’s interaction. After Jake and Brett were done dancing, they took a cab home. While in the cab, they decided to take the long way home and tour the town. Which ended the ride with Jake and Brett kissing and the only reason they were never anything more than that kiss was because of Jake's injury. After her night at the bar and taxi with Jake, of course Brett needed more attention. According to C. Whitworth, “Lady Brett Ashley and Jake Barnes: The New In-Crowd” “She sleeps around and is not chastised for it. But she is never shown to be truly happy about her newfound independence” (para 3). That goes along with how she is able to sleep with many guys but no one thinks anything of it, but instead the guys including Robert, Jake, Mike and Romero. This aspect of the characters shows how often the characters are dealing with alcohol and how it is a part of their everyday life. It seems as if every other scene in The Sun Also Rises is them all hanging out and drinking at the bar. On page 28 is when Brett was first introduced, but Jake already knew her from the war. When she was first mentioned, they were all at a bar. In the middle of the book at the fiesta, three dancers were teaching Brett how to drink out of the wine skins. And towards the very end of the book Jake and Brett are at the bar that is in the hotel talking and drinking
