Older men constantly try to recapture their youth; denying the thought that they no longer live the exciting life they used to. A prime example of this characteristic can be found in John Cheever’s character, Neddy, in “The Swimmer.” Through symbolic meanings and representations of values, Cheever makes the setting of “The Swimmer” significant to the story. Neddy’s final setting reveals how alone he is and represents his final downfall. The story itself serves as a timeline of his life, despite the events taking place over the course of a day. This swift change in seasons also changes his outlook on himself. Neddy now takes into account how his young, athletic body now has lame arms, rubbery legs, and a cold felt all the way down to the bone. He also cannot remember the misfortunes that he had gone through. Neddy decides that whiskey can cure his cold. The alcohol stretches back to Neddy’s youth where he would spend his days drinking, but as an adult he cannot do so. As Neddy changes scenes to the Biswanger’s party, he receives the largest slap in the face. Mrs. Biswanger allows Neddy into the party, but is not happy about it. Neddy hears her speaking to other guests about how he had asked to borrow money earlier, but he assumes it is just her talking about her money as usual. He cannot connect that the story is in fact about him and instead goes to the bar to get a drink. The bartender serves Neddy a common drink that disappoints Neddy, for he had had this waiter before. The drinks given to people were based on the social statuses. Neddy’s common drink represents his common status and his inability of living his former “high life.” Neddy’s journey eventually leads him home to his actual house. At this time, he is a feeble
