In the book April Morning by Howard Fast, on April 19th, 1775, in Lexington, Massachusetts, fifteen-year-old Adam Cooper goes through some dramatic changes in just one day’s time after the British redcoat’s attack. In the morning, he woke up an immature boy, but before he went to bed, he became a young man. Throughout the book, Adam shows several traits of how immature, fearful, and mature he is.
'Across Five Aprils' is a novel written by Irene Hunt that takes place on the farm of Creighton's family in southern Illinois during the American Civil War. This book extends five Aprils from 1861 to 1865.The American Civil war was happening between the Union and the Confederate Army. The American war is breaking families apart because of the disagreement of the concept of war. When the war begins, Creighton's son, Jethro sees that the war may be dividing north and the south from each other but also dividing people between his family. It wasn't what Jethro imagine the war would be like.
Mary Ann Shadd Cary, who was an abolitionist, a lawyer, and a publisher, worked with the fugitive community to help the fugitive slaves who crossed the border into Canada. As the injustice against slaves escalates in the United States, Shadd Cary wants her newspaper to deliver outcries of the fugitives slaves. In her passage, Shadd Cary uses metaphor, logical appeal, and rhetorical questions in order to convey her message that the newspaper is needed. In the first paragraph, Shadd Cary uses metaphor to describe the importance of the newspaper.
In the book “Across Five Aprils” by Irene Hunt, the author makes a few statements to portray her feelings toward the war, she uses the characters and their actions to show her emotions and thoughts about it. The views on war change throughout the book, in the beginning Tom and Jethro think war is going to be so cool, but as time went on their thoughts change. I believe one of her views from the book shows that she is passionate towards war, she uses Tom to demonstrate this. Tom is a soldier, and he is very passionate about what he does for the Union.
The rhetorical question gives the reader a sense of what this whole text was written for which is to give an answer that speaks for itself. Intro: Mary Ann Shadd Cary was an African American abolitionist, newspaper publisher, lawyer, educator and writer. When she moved from the United States to Canada to work with the slaves who received freedom due to the Fugitive Slave Act, she writes referring to this particular community to have their own voice through a newspaper of their own. To achieve this she uses techniques such as rhetorical strategies, parallelism and persuasion in her text from an editorial “Why Establish This Paper?”

Simpson creates images that make the audience view the important stereotypes of black women in a new and improved way. Lorna presents us with provocative and life-changing images because she sees black female identity as an overlooked culture. In her images, she expresses her thoughts on the representation that black woman has in our culture she also points out that because of our society black women aren 't able to embrace themselves as who they are because they are influenced by other cultures.
In The First Part Last Angela Johnson uses symbols to tell weather or not bobby is coming of age. I think that bobby did come of age and became a man. Some symbols are when he decided to keep feather and he came back for her when he left her when he left her at home when he was on his way to the basketball courts. So here is the story of bobby. Basketball represents childhood rolling away.
In The Glass Castle the main character Jeanette Walls has a very poor life style. She grew up with an alcoholic father who couldn't hold a job. A mother who never had much money and two crazy grandparents. She was in and out of schooling and had many bullies. This is not what most would say is an ideal circumstance to succeed.

He immediately sets the tone for the passage with this statement that draws back to the passage’s theme of the American dream of material success. He then describes an experience in which his mother “stands waving toward no one in particular.” It can be inferred that the particular event being described is the departure of his siblings - possibly back to work.

Throughout Frank McCourt’s novel “Angela’s Ashes” symbolism is used to reinforce the idea of social class, as the McCourt family are living in poverty. In the book many different symbols are used to represent the idea of social class, such as the weather, food and the River Shannon. All three of these symbols help to strongly portray the idea of social class and the struggles they went through due to social class through the entire book. The symbol of the Limerick weather relates to the idea of social class in “Angela’s Ashes” because it mirrors their lives.

Recently, an anti-abortion group conducted an undercover interview and discovered that Planned Parenthood uses fetal tissue for scientific research, which is against the law.
