“The Father” by Hugh Garner Topic: Discuss John Purcell’s personality traits that make him a poor father in the short story “The Father,” by Hugh Garner In the short story “The Father,” by Hugh Garner, it is apparent that John Purcell does not have a great relationship with his son because he is selfish, unaware, and uninvolved. Firstly, it begins to show that John Purcell is a selfish man when his wife, Helen, tells him that their son, Johnny, does not own the complete Boy Scout outfit. This is proven when he says ‘Listen, Helen, for God’s sake take him downtown with you tomorrow and get the rest of the Boy Scout outfit. In the book Hands of My Father by Myron Uhlberg, I learned about a hearing child’s life being raised by two Deaf parents. I gained insight on hearing children with Deaf parents, how Deaf parents depend on their hearing children, frustrations associated with being a hearing child of Deaf parents, personal difficulties Myron encountered while interpreting for his parents, etc. Hearing children with Deaf parents often had the roles reversed, Deaf parents relied on hearing children to translate and explain things to them. The boy brings up multiple times the embarrassing memory of when his father was detained by the FBI. In The Road, a novel by Cormac McCarthy, published in 2006, a man and a boy struggle to survive as they travel south on the road in the post-apocalyptic world. On their journey to the coast, the man and the boy encounter the remains of an ashen world, ravaged by men who are willing to kill to survive. Among the death and destruction of the post-apocalyptic world, McCarthy illustrates how the man gains resilience from the spirituality he finds within his son, which proves how in a world void of official religion, belief in something greater than yourself creates the strength necessary to survive. The man sees his son as a spiritual figure that provides him the strength to survive in the desolate world.
Symbolism in “The Birthmark” In “The Birthmark” Nathaniel Hawthorne gives us a story that is telling us on some level to accept your own, as well as other people's imperfections or it could destroy not only your relationship with them, but also your relationship with yourself. In this story Hawthorne uses symbolism to show us exactly how this kind of behavior can lead to not just ruining relationships, but in this case even death. In “The Birthmark” Hawthorne uses a wide variety of objects and people such as a withering flower, a birthmark, poison, Aylmer's dream and Georgiana's death, and even a character named Aminidab to symbolize that nobody is in fact perfect and we all must accept each others flaws in order to have good and healthy relationships.

The experiences people go through impact the way the see world and those around them. Children are raised by their parents and witnesses to the triumphs and failures. When the age comes many often question their parent’s decisions. Some may feel bitterness and contempt while others may feel admiration and motivation. The “Sign in My Father’s Hands” by Martin Espada conveys the feeling of being treated as a criminal for doing the right thing.
Fatherless. Growing up as an African-American female, I have come to certain realizations that have made me more cautious of the people I chose to associate myself with on a day-to-day basis based on ignorance that society distributes for others’ use. For example, society portrays the black cultural without a father raised in a single-mother household in a low-income environment. By providing this image to the world, it allows them to interpret that image in any way they chose. In my case, my father was in my life for a short period of time which proved that stereotype right.
