Hyper Lee is a white female author that grew up in a small town in Alabama, while Great Depression and segregation. She is mainly known for her masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel shows what it’s like to live in the ’60s from the point of view of the young narrator. Since the book uses racist terms, so it's one of the most banned books worldwide, but also one of the most studied. The novel takes place in a town in Alabama, called Maycomb. The town is full of many harsh people and good people. Bravery is a good lesson that the novel teaches you, It’s important to be brave for others and yourself. Atticus offers to help Tom Robinson with legal support in his trial even though he knows he will lose (Lee 223-266). Atticus helping Tom Robison could ruin his reputation being a white man helping a black man, the lesson is shown here through Atticus risking his reputation for someone else. Additionally, Boo Radley saved Scout and Jem from possible death when being attacked by Bob Ewell (Lee 299-310). Radley helps Scout and Jem in this life-threatening situation showing a lesson of bravery by Boo risking his life against Ewell. In addition, another example of unselfish bravery is when Dill runs away from his home in Mississippi back to Maycomb to get away from his abusive parents (Lee 187). Racism is shown as pointless and stupid in the novel, therefore not being racist is another teaching the book gives you. Furthermore, an example of this is when Tom Robinson gets accused of rape when there is no proof of the rape. (Lee 184-323). Mr. Robinson's getting charged with this horrific crime is unfair due to his appearance. Not only…, but since being a jury was a higher power job, the whole jury was white (Lee 184-296). The jury being all white shows discrimination towards other colors of people. Similarly, white people can call black people names and it is treated normally (Lee 3-376). Others being able to call other nationalities names without a little side eye shows unfairness and imbalance between people. Being targeted by your skin color is just one of the lessons the novel teaches
