Friendship in Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men is about migrant workers in the 1930s. Migrant workers are lonely during this time. Making and maintaining bonds are incredibly rare due to their circumstances. However, the main characters of this book overcome this challenge and stay together until the end. The core theme of this book is friendship and its importance is demonstrated through the relationship between the two main characters, the interactions of the migrant workers, and the effects of having no one. The most important example is the main characters’ bond. The protagonists are George and Lennie. They have a relationship that resembles one of a father and son. George has taken care of Lennie since they were both young and continues to look after him throughout adulthood. These two have a dream together and through all their hardships are adamant about sticking together to achieve it. George and Lennie stated, “With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us…I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, (Steinbeck 14)”.
