Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a collectivist society. Ayn Rand lived through communism and she saw nazisim,in her book she gives an example of a collectivist society, she uses this novel to warn people about what could happen if we lived in a society like that. Ayn Rand uses her novela ANTHEM to explore the theme of individualism by having Equality discover light, by defing society, and discovering that ones self respect is the most important thing in the universe. To start when Equality discovered light for the first time in the tunnel he also becomes smarter By doing this he starts to become independant by being the only one who knows this information and becoming smarter by himself. You see this in chapter 3 when he finds the power of light (electricity). “we Equality 7-2521 have discovered a new power of nature. And we have dicovered it alone, and we are alone to know it.(Rand chpt 3). This signifies his independance from everyone around him, by gaining knowledge that even the scholars do not know, plus finding electricity. …show more content…

Also when they woke up after being knocked out equality said “ then we smiled, for we thought of the light and that we had not betrayed it”(Rand chpt 6). This proves that Equality is the most defiant character in Anthem because he defied society by being whipped and not giving in to the punishment showing he has become
