In The Things They Carried there was a lot going on in my essay. I had a weak thesis to, I did not explain how the rhetorical devices O’Brien used was significant to the audience, and I did not have a conclusion. First, for my thesis, I kept most of the order I had before, but deleted the metaphor part and moved it somewhere else. Also, in my body paragraphs, I was skipping important ideas such as the most important: the audience, I had to make sure I wrote about how O’Brien’s rhetorical devices affected them. Such as when he use polysyndeton it was so that the readers understand that soldiers did not have one feeling throughout the war but multiple.
Tim O'Brien uses intentional narrative and rhetorical devices in his book "The Things They Carried" to advance various themes within it, such as storytelling, memory power and emotional baggage. O'Brien examines each theme through these narrative devices. O'Brien effectively explores these themes through imagery. His vivid descriptions bring home both physical and emotional burdens that soldiers carry, such as Lt. Cross's love for Martha being like "a stone in his stomach" (O'Brien 5). Such images create a powerful depiction of emotional weight soldiers carry with them and highlight its importance within military lives.
Finally, the film “The Patriot” by Robert Rodat uses the archetypes of the quest for revenge and the fall to reveal how we as humans are willing to go to war for freedom, and for family, and unite people together under one cause. People are willing to go to war for family, freedom, revenge and to bring together a country or group of people.
In this quote O’Brien uses sensory details such as “the stink” (smell) and “flares and mortar rounds” (sight) to create a depiction of the event in which the soldiers had lost Kiowa. It also creates a sense of realism and authenticity that draws the reader into the story while making the soldiers’ experiences feel more immediate and tangible. Overall, by O’Brien including these examples of imagery into his novel it allowed the reader to feel the trembling fear that every one of these
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien uses many rhetorical devices and specific narrative elements to enhance the overall themes by using point of view, imagery, and metaphors. Tim O’Brien uses his friend’s point of view to elaborate on the war experiences and the feelings of his fellow friends. On Page 62, O’Brien states, “Rat almost bawls writing it. He gets all teary telling about good times they had together and how her brother made the war almost fun.” This shows the emotions and feeling Rat was experiencing during the war.

In the novel, The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, the author describes a platoon marching through Vietnam at the time of the Vietnamese War. He does so by describing in detail the items that each of the men carry with them during their march. The things that the soldiers carry with them are not only tangible but intangible items as well, and what these things are depend fully upon each individual soldier. They carry Military Payment Certificates, the basic "necessities" for survival along with the bare minimum to make life as livable as possible during the time of war. In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried,” the character, O’Brien, is shot during combat. The medic on duty, being a rooky, is unsure of how to help O’Brien. He is later hospitalized and unable to fight anymore. When he finally returns to combat duty, he feels out of place and no longer at home with the other soldiers. He becomes obsessed with exacting his revenge on the medic.
This passage intrigues me because it explains a little how a body is prepared for a funeral. As a student looking into the health community, this intrigues me because of how it is seen as similarity to surgery. “His equipment, consisting of scalpels, scissors, augers, forceps, clamps, needles, pumps, tubes, bowls and basins (...)” (2) The informative tone that Mitford possesses for this essay sounds like what a college professor would lecture, it can get a bit boring (but then again, that could be because of my generation 's attention span and my attention span) but overall informing and she makes it seem as though you need notes on these (then again, most informative writings seem that way). She also uses descriptive language to hook the readers with colorful words (not bad words, just descriptive) and her use of them boosts the readings likeability, in my opinion.

The metaphor describes how the soldiers had faced war for so long, they practically carried the setting they were in. Physically, they carried the environment on their bodies as odor. Metaphorically, it explains the incredible weight they carried since they “carried gravity” which explains the weight of the country they were fighting in and what the war meant to them.
