I feel “The Third Expedition” is a very well constructed chapter from “The Martian Chronicles”. This chapter is filled with character development, suspense and social commentary. In this chapter each character grows as you learn more about some of their lives, for example the captain when you learn about the loss of his brother and parents while seeing how he feels seeing them again, this helps show the depth of each character and to understand their situations better. This chapter also portrays the eerie atmosphere of Mars, this helps the readers really feel how the humans felt going into a new plant, but also the familiarity of finding people they once knew. As you read the chapter you can notice foreshadowing throughout the story, this is really shown in the scenery and the captain’s skepticism of the town and the townspeople. This chapter is filled with tension as you watch the story unfold, waiting to see what will happen next, waiting to see if the humans will survive this expedition. This tension really keeps the reader wrapped up in the plot of the story, it keeps the reader interested in waiting for the next revival. This chapter shows really powerful symbolism, the Martian landscape and hierarchy is truly just a reflection of the human race and how equality is unjust. This chapter’s theme is very well shown by how the characters feel and how the scenery is described. The theme of this chapter is at first light and happy because the crew are being reunited with past family members, but as you read on you feel a sense of eerily loneliness and isolation, this adds depth to the plot of the
