Ray Bradbury was a science fiction fantasy author. Bradbury was born August 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois. Bradbury had a pleasant childhood, which he describes in several novels. Bradbury decided to become a writer around the age of 12 or 13. Bradbury’s family moved to Los Angeles in 1934. As a teenager, Bradbury participated in school drama clubs. After graduating high school in 1938, Bradbury couldn’t afford college, so he went to the library instead. Bradbury sold newspapers to support himself while writing. Bradbury published his first short story in an entertainment magazine in 1938. These two stories are both set on earth in the future, and they both had horrific events happen. In the story “There Will Come Soft Rains” the story was set on earth in the future. There was a house that was electronic. It worked for its owners, it cooked their breakfast, tells them when to wake up and what day it is, and things to help the owners of the house. “In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunnyside up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cool glasses of milk.” The house cooked food for everyone in the house. The House was the only house left after a radioactive bomb hit earth. “Ten o'clock. The sun came out from behind the rain. The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles.” The radioactive glow was from a radioactive bomb that hit. There was nothing left except for that one house. In the story Fahrenheit 451, it was set on earth in the future. In the future, firefighters burned books and started fires instead of fighting them. “and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history.” The firefighter is burning books to get rid of history. …show more content…

In the story, “Dark They Were and Golden Eyed” everyone was sent to Mars because of a war that was happening on earth. Harry Bittering was a character who was very anxious about everything on mars. He didn’t like the feeling or thought of being on a different planet. He also felt weird about the food on Mars. The food was the same but different to Mr. Bittering. “...Onions but not onions, carrots but not carrots. Tastes the same but different. Smell: not like it used to be. He felt his heart pounding, and he was afraid.” Mr. Bittering can see things changing and doesn’t like it. Mr. Bittering is determined to get home so he can feel safe again But there are no more rockets coming to Mars. “Build a rocket, that's what.” Mr. Bittering decides to build a rocket because he is determined to get home and feel comfortable again. Everyone is changing into martians and Mr. Bittering finally accepts the fact that nobody is going to leave Mars. “Yes he said, feeling his flesh melt in the hot liquid air. Yes , in the autumn. I’ll begin work again then.” Mr. Bittering didn’t like the thought of not being able to go back to earth, but he finally accepted it. In the story, “There Will Come Soft Rains” there was a smart house that did things for its owners. The house was on going and didn’t just give up even when there wasn’t anyone living there.
