The Third that Saved the World In the novel , Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card , Ender the main protagonist goes on an interstellar adventure to save the human race from an alien invasion. In the Earth created by Orson Scott Card the human race is so overpopulated that the government must approve each birth and prefers that there be at max , two children per family. More than two children can be had but taxes and school costs will rise. At this time , Earth is in the midst of a second alien “bugger” attack. The first which was catastrophic in the death toll to the IF ( International Fleet) has prompted the government to collect children upon birth approval and certain age to come work for the IF to train and prepare for the incoming “bugger” attack. If the first two children are not approved to be soldiers by the government then the family is (rarely) allowed to have a third child. This is what happened with the Wiggin family. Ender Wiggin the “third” of his family was the child who was approved to train with the IF. Shipped away from everything he knew on Earth he was forced to grow up and learn to fend for himself, with no parents, and no support.
