1777 Words8 Pages
Music is an art form whose medium is sound. The significance and the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Willloughby (2007) stated that “music eludes a clear definition, it is both science and art” (p. 26). Music may be played and heard live, may be part of a dramatic work or film, or may be recorded. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres. In general, music can be classified into three categories of genre: rock, country, and rhythm and blues (R&B). The first type of music genre is rock. It began in the mid-1950s in America. Rock music was essentially an underground and protest music. The older generation at that time believed that this genre had nothing to contribute to America’s music culture but they were obviously wrong. Rock not only survived but became a commercial product. For a short period of time after that it became a powerhouse of the recording industry. Jones (1992) stated that Rock music is the most important cultural expression in the United States today. Rock music, which accounts for more than 80 percent of all record and tapes sold, is also a core of a $2 billion business that dwarfs other entertainment industries. (p. 2)
Rock is a combination of several styles and influences, especially R&B and country and western. The main instrument that is used in this genre is guitar. This music genre has a lot of sub-genres. Three of them are blues rock, hard rock, and glam rock. Blues
