Value-based care aligns with the triple aim of health care and initiatives to achieve health equity in many ways. The goal of the triple aim is to improve the individual experience, improve the health of the population, and reduce health care costs. Value-based care aligned with the triple aim of equity has been achieved by incentivizing healthcare providers to improve the patient’s experience. They have attempted to do this by spending more time with patients to accurately diagnose and treat their ailments to improve overall health. When patients are viewed as customers, there is more information available for them to make better informed decisions which can result in lower cost of care but to what result. An example is within our mental health crisis. We can research the prices for our care and select the best option, but if the interventions we use to treat mental health are not producing favorable outcomes, we are spending more money on ineffective treatment (Drake & Bond, 2021). In addition to considering commercialization and its implications on value-based care, we must consider consumerism. Consumerism can create teamwork between the healthcare provider and patient, synergizing the transition to value-based care. Consumerism promotes accountability of patients to take control of their care. They have more awareness of health care options and have the means through flexible spending accounts to pay for services, and they are held accountable for poor lifestyle practices by paying higher premiums.
