“Change is inevitable, change is constant” - Benjamin Disraeli The theme in The True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle is that everything is that change is inevitable and you have to accept it. To begin in the very first couple chapters Charlotte was an innocent little city girl and once she went to the ship, she found that the world was changing, along with herself., because when she was going to be accompanied by two families, but they didn’t show up and she changed dramatically, she went from a curious city girl into a nervous girl in “unknown” territory. Then she caught people looking at her with a “hateful” glare, in turn making her feel uneasy, then unsafe and she became a “snitch”. For example, Mr. Fisk and the crew decided that if she could climb the royal yard, she could be part of the crew, when she did this task, for example, she got stronger, she had to climb 100 yards up, which means she also got more stamina, along with more endurance, and persistence, which is a huge change from the beginning of the story. Next in chapter 15 there is a hurricane, and Charlotte is assigned the task of going up to free a sail so it doesn’t fly off. In this Charlotte is tested to the core because she is forced to climb up the sail in the hurricane, in this she changes emotionally and physically, for the physical changes she got stronger and cut her hair, she also had gotten emotionally tougher in terms of persistence, because she is in the storm,you need persistence and strength and she showed and gained that. First, she is taken to the ships “court” and she is held responsible for Mr. Hollybrass’s death. She got emotionally tougher because she had to be persistent enough to tell the case even when she was interrupted, also she got emotionally tougher, because no one would stand up for her not murdering Mr. Hollybrass, so she got emotionally tougher, because she was being ignored, so she learned not to cry or outburst in emotions. Next Charlotte changes when she is caught while trying to steal the key to captain jaggery’s gun safe, but when he caught her, she got emotionally changed because she was caught and had to be courageous enough to tell him the truth, and even when he gives her the options, she doesn't choose the one in the plan she makes the right decision, and doesn’t take any of his options, she takes her own. The second to last piece of evidence is when Charlotte was changed emotionally when she technically killed captain jaggery and became captain of the ship. When she was attacked by captain jaggery on the ratlines, she had to “fight” back so when he lunged at her, she pushed him into the sea, and he almost dragged her in but she managed to get back up onto the deck.
