Conflict Main internal conflict: The wife of a deceased pilot, Kathryn Lyons, discovered her husband had died in a plane crash. During Janie’s first marriage, her husband was the mayor of Eatonville, which caused others to be jealous of their relationship. Although the marriage wasn’t happy and peaceful, the townspeople wanted the power that Janie seemed to have and when they realized they would never get it, they criticized Janie for every mistake she made. When her husband died, Janie mourned publically for months, but she eventually found a new husband whom she moved away with. Conflict is the essence of any literary fiction. The main goal of an author is to tell a story that keeps the reader interested. At the story’s core, conflict is the momentum of happening and change and is crucial on all levels for delivering information and building characterization as well as building the story itself. Conflict is the source of change that engages a reader and keeps them interested. In a story, conflict and action does what description and telling of feelings and situations do not.
Instead of the conflict of the story being between a husband and wife, the conflict is between a mother and a daughter. In the beginning of the story, we can see the obvious conflict between the two. The mother is what one might consider to be strict or abusive or maybe even just tough love. Many times, throughout the story, the mother is said to have hit or choked her daughter. Because of this, the daughter has turned into a disobedient girl and will do anything to go against the wishes of her mother.
The narrator feels oppressed by her relationship with her husband, her house, and the wallpaper. One example given in the story about the protagonist being oppressed by John is how he decides to treat her depression. First he puts her in a room where the conditions are not well for her to stay.
