In the United States there are two major parties involved in our political structure, Democrats and Republicans. Since 1836, these two parties have dominated the political scene and Democrats and Republicans have controlled Congress and the presidency since 1860. Now, within these two parties there are people with progressive and conservative ideologies. These ideologies are not confined to only one political party, but instead are largely based on the individual’s opinion and perspective. Generally speaking though, most conservatives are Republicans and most progressives are Democrats.
Political party systems were dead after the Federalists crashed and burned due to a series of mishaps. However, the detrimental institute of political parties was revived as a result of the Jacksonian era. This is due to contributions of a combination of major political personalities and economic issues. Therefore, the disagreements between various men over a vast amount of issues lead to the separation of the Demo-Repubs into two different parties - the Democrats and the Republicans. Political parties had been around for decades, even though George Washington left a specific warning not to form them.
During Revolutionary America, two political parties came about: the Federalists and the Democratic-Republics. The Federalists believed in supported federal administration and were highly in favor of the Constitution, while the Democratic-Republicans favored the idea of extending the Revolution to everyday people. Their party names reflect their standpoints. The Election of 1796 was the first in American History for candidates running for office to belong to organized political parties.

A political party is two different organizations made up of people with different ideas for how the country should be run. They argue over “who is right”. Jefferson, the Democratic Republicans, and Hamilton, the Federalists, had very different ideas for the new nation.
Brianna Whorley 2A Current Event 1 In response to the Orlando shooting, protests broke in Congress about the controversy on gun control. During this protest many republicans tried to stop the sit-in by shutting down cameras that were broadcasting the sit-in on national TV; however, democrats stood their ground by taping the speeches and posting them via periscope and Facebook. One democrat stated that, “the sit-in was breaking rules anyway.” By Wednesday afternoon many democrats and over 34 senators out of the 44 that were attendance were on the floor of the house (some literally on the floor).
The election of 1796, John Adams versus Thomas Jefferson. The former won by only 3 single electoral college votes. In a highly competitive, controversial race filled with fake smiles and harsh glares, those votes made all the difference in the world to these two men and their running mates. Because George Washington refused a second term, political parties took root when election time came around. No one knew that this election in the early stages of Americas development would define the future of the United States of America.
The Second Party System was composed of the Democratic Party which was led by Jackson and the Whig Party which was led by Clay. Today, and throughout much of American history, this system takes the form of political parties. Furthermore, despite the existence of other parties like the Green Party, Reform Party, and Socialist Party, the only two political parties genuinely elected within the United States are the Democrat Party and Republican Party. Democrats and Republicans have some resemblances and some differences to each other. Even though Republicans and Democrats are from the same social classes their political beliefs and ideas are not the same. Additionally, both parties have to be voted in, believe in civil rights, and agree on the judicial process. Although, there are still many disagreements such as abortion, health care and national security.
Republicans vs. Democrats When the United States of America was founded, George Washington warned against the formation of political parties. By the time the second election came around there were already two political parties, the Federalist and Democratic-Republicans. These parties eventually turned into the Republican and Democratic parties we have today. While these parties have shifted to become almost polar opposites politically, they still share some common goals.
A political party is an alliance of like-minded individuals who work together in an effort to win elections and control the government in their favor. Finally, it will be argued that the modern political party system in the United States is a two-party system dominated by the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The Democratic Party generally positions itself as centre-left in American politics and supports a modern American liberal platform, while the Republican Party generally positions itself as centre-right and supports a modern American conservative platform. Political parties serve countless roles in America’s government. Foremost, it needs to be said they are crucial to America’s political system. The political parties are the heart and brain of our government's body, urging people to conceive and feel different ways on different topics whether the controversy is over how money is distributed or the way immigrants should be treated or dealt with. With each party having a biased view it shows how a group can be increasingly powerful with bountiful amounts of support, names and divisions can be heard. Democrats are widely known to be liberal rather than conservative.
