Those symbols, which are meant to evoke powerful, prideful sentiments, then become a tool used by fear mongers and warmongers to tell people what is patriotic and what is not, which then becomes a clear invasion upon free thought and speech. It is not that new icons or symbols are needed to accurately portray what America stands for, but rather for people to start respecting one another for the different ways in which these icons and symbols are interpreted. A truly successful democracy, an ideal that is a driving factor behind American politics and foreign affairs, allows for a body of free thinking individuals to unite, when necessary, to work together toward progress. It does not matter what symbolizes their unity, or how that symbol is interpreted, but simply that
The American flag is a symbol that every American is proud of, it also represents the ideas of liberty and equality. In the article “Dissent” it states, “If those ideas are worth fighting for – and our history demonstrates that they are – it cannot be true that the flag that uniquely symbolizes their power is not itself worthy of protection from unnecessary desecration.” It comes to show that our flag is our type of “role model” for us to be strong and defend our flag`s symbolic meaning.
Finally, no I do not believe that the flag is a symbol of hatred or racism, but I do believe that some individuals do believe that, that’s what the whole history of the flag is based on. I believe that every individual should get solid facts/proof/knowledge on the topic and actually know what is going on, instead of believing everything that they hear and or see on the internet, TV, radio, ect… We already have enough problems in this world as it is. Know what you’re talking about and about your history before you open your mouth and make things an extremely bigger problem than it should
After all the Southern states used the same flag when they supported slavery and fought against the Union. To most people, the flag represents racial discrimination supremacism and injustice. In my mind what makes america great is the not only the american flag, but also the national anthem, the declaration of independence, and the constitution. The american flag and the declaration of independence are both a sign of freedom and independence. And the national anthem is a sign of respect to the founding fathers of american.and the constitution have not only helped us but has kept us safe. The flag was first made in June 1776.
The confederate flag is immediately recognizable in the back window of a pickup truck or portrayed on the t-shirt for Lynrd Skynrd and Credence Clearwater, but has come under stark criticism. The argument is a multi-faceted assault, by, both restricting first amendment rights of free speech, restricting a symbol of southern heritage, and a person ’s right not to feel threatened by an assumed racist epithet. It is a simple piece of fabric, the red and blue Southern Cross, which divides a nation much as it did 150 years ago when it symbolized the fight against oppressive laws. Many believe that the Confederate Flag is representative of the patriots who were willing to sacrifice their lives to protect the nation and individual rights the founding fathers envisioned, however today, liberals and minorities have made the claim, the confederate flag is racist rather than a simple symbol of southern pride.

The stripes represent the 13 colonies in the United States and the stars represent the 50 states. When the Founding Fathers were trying to put together a seal for the United States
It is true that the American flag is important. One would be insane to step forward and suggest it is merely a piece of cloth, unimportant in the long scheme of things. The flag has given Americans courage and strength for generations upon generations, and to treat it lightly is truly in bad taste. However, since when has America’s focus been set upon taste and manners? We are a respectable country, to be certain, but what sets us apart is our freedom.
Another thing I think about when I see the American Flag I think about our freedom. How we fight to keep our freedom. How the soldiers fight against the freedom. It makes me think about how we won our freedom when Britain surrendered. One
