At the same time, classification plays an important role in understanding these complex figures that we still need to understand. At the same time, origin of species also relates to the chapter 1 because pesticides became a product that was meant to remove any bugs or insects. But, no one thought the pesticides, atrazine, DDT, and PCBs, would lead to breast cancer for women in Illinois. When I read this chapter, I did not expect pesticides to be a cause of breast cancer. Normally, they are just to get rid of bugs and insects from plants and would have thought it cause one of the worst cancer in women.
There is always opposition to pesticides because of the harm that it can cause on the environment and the animals alike. Pesticides though have saved a lot of hard work for farmers over the past couple of decades because it does all the dirty work, for example, the killing of weeds and other pests. Pesticides have also saved a lot of money for farmers by preventing pests from damaging crops or taking the nutrients and water supply away from crops. (Whitford, 7) In the future we need to start to find less toxic ways to prevent pests from attacking the crops and vegetation. This would prevent a lot of the other costs associated with pesticides for example, health costs for farmers that are exposed to the toxic chemicals or the killing of the habitats in the surrounding areas.
Carson appeals to the arousal of the basic emotions, such as the arousal of fear in the public. Carson also appeals to pathos, or the emotions, by questioning the “highly intelligent” creators of these pesticides. Carson believes irrational bad decisions based on faulty evidence threaten the future existence of mankind. “Along with the possibility of the extinction of mankind by nuclear war, the central problem of our age has therefore become the contamination of man’s total environment with such substances of incredible potential for harm-substances that accumulate in the tissues of plants and animals and even penetrate the germ cells to shatter or alter the very material of heredity upon which the shape of the future depends.” However, the statement supports Carson’s intention to present a persuasive, and logical point of view without confusing the reader; suggesting she ment to go against a patient audience rather than an impatient one.
The purpose of published “Silent Spring” was to alert and inform everyone about the danger the environment is in due to the spraying of pesticides. Carson wanted to let the public know the truth about pesticides that governments and health organizations were hiding from everyone. In the beginning of Chapter 2 Rachel states “The most alarming of all man’s assaults upon the environment is the contamination of the air, earth, rivers, and sea with dangerous and even lethal material. ”(5). This quote explains Carson’s whole purpose of the book in one sentence; to bring change in the world by preventing the widespread use of DDT and dangerous pesticides.
As a result, the chemicals “ had only limited success” due to the insects evolving their immune systems. As well as damaging the living space of many people by exposing the chemicals into the air. Thus, contaminating the same air the people’s breathes as well as the water supplies that many organisms depend on. Pesticides are, as defined by the US Government, “agricultural chemical products.” (Chemicals and Pesticides) These pesticides are meant to kill any organisms that are attacking crops. In the process, the pesticides do end up interfering with the pest’s life cycles. Ismael would say that it’s not fair that humans are so freely messing with another organism’s way of life just so that they could get their own food, and that this is another way humans are able to distinguish themselves as Takers.

This incident describes how powerful the example she uses is, why pesticides are bad and not used correctly and can affect human health. Carson brings attention to the severe consequences faced by workers affected by pesticides and the workers life was only saved by medical attention, which shows the grave situation and the urgent need for responsible and sustainable practices
On the other hand, pesticides are not a good idea because, they are in the food we eat and water we drink. These Pesticides are hurting tens of thousands of animals and humans each and every day and we don´t even realize it either. Pesticides are in everything they are in the food we eat and the air we breath and even in the water we drink. Also, does it ever make you wander is the food we eat safe and the other the things that pesticides effect that affect are they really safe for me to be eating or even drinking. While, you still stuck on that kind of problem you will not belive what else they hurt are honey bees and the honey we eat.
Biologist, Rachel Carson, in her book, “Silent Spring” makes note of the fact that many animals are being targeted with deadly poisons. She develops her claim by first defining what the threat is towards animals and one of the specific poisons, parathion, that is being used to kill thousands of animals, specifically birds. Then, Carson gives an example of parathion being used on a cornfield that killed 65,000 blackbirds and starlings and sheds light on the deadly effects parathion can have on humans who come in contact with it. Finally, Carson questions the handling of the deadly poison and who has the right to decide when the poison is to be used. The addition and reinvention of new machines, and the quick rate at which they are learning, are rapidly becoming an integral part of the labor market. During World War II, there was a boom in the invention of new automation for war time use, which led to more jobs in the United States. New inventions change the job skills needed for jobs and the way jobs work both in the past and the present.
Jane Goodall, a primatologist, ethologist, and anthropologist, explains that the greatest risk to our future is lacking enthusiasm and concern about its outcome. Considering Goodall is extremely environmentally keen, it is more than likely she is emphasizing this towards the future of the entire ecosystem, including plants and animals, rather than only the future of the human race. She explains that if the human race falls to a deficiency of caring about our environment, it can and will lead to a vast threat to the future of the world’s ecosystem. Often humans forget about the importance of the ecosystem and instead we become caught up in ourselves and our own individual needs. Goodall is stressing that if these egotistical human acts continue to occur, the future of our ecosystem is in jeopardy.
In today’s world, there are many people creating new chemical substances that has negative effect to our world. Rachel Carson, in her article "The Obligation to Endure" argues that the pesticides and other chemicals we use are harmful to more than just the environment. I agree with Carson in her article, in that we should reduce most of the harmful chemical use and instead use technological inventions. Carson is a person who seems very passionate about the environment and is very concerned of its inhabitants. It is hard to believe that intelligent human beings would use bad chemicals substances that would affect the environment and themselves negatively.
Imagine having so much pesticides in use that people and animals were actually dying from it. In the 1950’s the overuse of pesticides was a serious problem. Rachel Carson was an activist who was against the use and overuse for these pesticides. She wanted to address this problem to the government and the public and warn about the harmful effects pesticides have on the environment and the people. In “A Fable For Tomorrow”, Rachel Carson utilizes ethos, logos and pathos in order to bring awareness to the overuse of pesticides.
Silent spring was published in 1962 and written by the brilliant Rachel Carson. Inside this environmental science book, the excess use of pesticides is documented and condemned. Silent Spring shows the effects humans can have in the natural world mainly focusing on the use of pesticides. This chemicals not only affect certain targets but the whole nature chain. Though it is primarily a scientific book, it is really easy to read and has a literary touch.
