In the beginning of the book, Phillip Malloy was passionate to make it into Harrison school’s track team. He thought that being only good at running would automatically make him into the team, but his grades interfered with his chance at the team. He didn’t make it into the track team because he detested Miss. Narwin’s class and felt the book, The Call of the Wild was useless, so he put the most unnecessary response to an answer of his exam.
Homer’s Odyssey and the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou are mirror images of each other. The characters in both stories go through events that display similar themes. For example, when Odysseus arrives at Helios island, his men show a lack of discipline and control within themselves. The crew were told by Odysseus not to hurt the cattle of the sun god when they were to arrive at the island.
Teenagers have dramatically evolved throughout the twentieth century. As they have changed, so have their attitudes. In the story, Among the Mourners, the protagonist Aurora, is seen as selfish and rude. She’s also shown as rather rebellious for her age. So where does she fit in?

Allow me to present to you the poem “November” by Lorna Davis. This beautiful piece uses vivid imagery to describe the desolate and melancholy turn of seasons between October and November. It is a classic Shakespearean sonnet, made up of three quatrains with perfect ABAB rhyme schemes, a volta, and a couplet. The author has really taken advantage of this structure to amplify the messaging by grouping together lines with similar meanings to create poetic rhythm as well as isolating certain parts to allow them to stand out more. If you look at lines 3-6, there is a motif of things deteriorating; the trees “have grayed”, the sunlight is “cold and tired”, and the “fruitful time’s approaching end”.

In the novel Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds. is about a few different people that have conflicts and they all are taking place at the same time of the same day. Bryson is at school and he is having a normal day. Then all of a sudden he starts hearing about what happened to his friend Ty.
Within the poems “On the Pulse of Morning” by Maya Angelou, and “One Today” by Richard Blanco, several challenges of the times the poems were written in were displayed, though not directly. In “On the Pulse of the Morning,” the Rock that Angelou describes wants us to “face [our] distant destiny, but seek no haven in [the Rock’s] shadow.” This line represents Americans looking out at the destiny of America. The Rock warns the reader away from the shadows, which typically symbolize evil, atrocity, and corruptness. Continuing on in the poem, Angelou expresses through the River that people “have left collars of waste upon [the River’s] shore, currents of debris upon [the River’s] breast.”
Topic Sentence: The growth of militaries made countries confident they’d win power for their nation. Proof: In Barbara Tuchman’s book entitled, The Guns of August, she says,”You will be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees.”
Lessons from the Culture Every year we see family emigrate to other countries, and they face many challenges. The stories “Sweet, Sour, and Resentful”, by Firoozeh Dumas, and from “Fish Cheeks”, by Amy Tan, share similar cultures and really interesting stories. Also, both families from the essay share several challenges that they are face when they move to the United States of America. The two families share many similarities; however, they differ in to keeping their culture, showing openness, and teaching a lesson from their culture to others.
The outcome of the movie, The Hunt for Red October, was that the US Navy on the USS Dallas and the Soviet Navy on the Red October were able to successfully destroy the enemy submarine, the V. K. Konovalov. Without the CIA analyst and former Marine, Jack Ryan’s convincing that the Red Octobers captain was trying to defect, the Soviet Union would have launched missiles on the United States east coast. The teamwork of the Navy’s caused the enemy submarine to be dismantled. The movie portrayed battles between two Soviet Union submarines, the Red October, the V. K. Konovalov, and a United States submarine, the USS Dallas.
Michael Pollan publishes an inspiring article, "Why Bother?" to The New York Magazine in April 20, 2008. Pollan desires to discusses the problems with society and how climate changed can be impacted. With only a few words in one can tell how passionate Pollan is in illustrating his "why bother?" question.
Mike Rose shares his personal story to the public in “I just wanna be average”, as he reveals the many flaws within the educational system of a high school in an economically depressed neighborhood in Los Angeles. He effectively directs his arguments towards both educators and parents by utilizing emotional and logical appeals. By convincing the audience to fear that children placed on remedial tracks are being hindered rather than assisted, the author causes both awareness and a feeling of duty to change the way we handle teaching children. Rose presents his argument by aiding the reader through the eyes of his younger self as he retells the story of his years in high school.
“On the Sunny Side of the Street” performed by Esperanza Spalding is a jazz and blues song about letting go of your worries by “walking on the sunny side of the street. The song is excellently performed and watching Esperanza Spalding perform was entrancing. The song was very cool and had a nice bass behind it. The light nature of the song was perfectly complimented by the low bass and free flowing piano notes. Many solos were performed and each one carried the liberating feel of the song forward.
Michael Brooks ENGH 396 Reading Response #2 September 17, 2015 Sunday in the Park Sunday in the Park by Bel Kaufman is an emotional short story the details a nice family’s encounter with an obnoxious, unpolished family. The short story plays on human emotion, instinct, and behavior as a way to illustrate the contrasting differences between both families. The story is about a family, a mother, a father and a young boy, who intend to spend a relaxing day together in the park. In the park, the young boy from the “nice family” is playing in the sandbox with a young boy from the other family. Suddenly, the boy from the other family starts throwing sand at the boy from the main family.
The popular song, “Sunday Bloody Sunday” was written and sung by the very famous Irish rock band U2. This Irish group is known for not staying with the norm of the music industry, they like to speak their minds and sing about the problems in the world and how they affect others. Each of their songs have different beats, and tunes, making them one of the most well-known and well-rounded bands in the world. This song is ranked in one of the best song of all time for many reasons, first it has a historic background that many people can connect to, a melody that makes you feel the emotions that the writer wanted the audience to have. With the audience having these powerful sensations, it makes the listeners imagine themselves and their own emotions.
