Volkswagen (VW) was found in violation Clean Air Act (CAA) on September 18, 2015 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA issued VW and its counterparts - , Audi AG, and Volkswagen Group of America a notice of violation (NOV) due to flagrancy of their actions. The NOV explained that four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars from model years 2009-2015 were equipped with software that falsified EPA emissions standards for certain air pollutants. Steve Berman, a plaintiffs’ lawyer in Seattle sated that, “We are going to launch a lawsuit on behalf of consumers against Volkswagen, and you are welcome to join,” Mr. Berman is an experienced lawyer, who has been involved in class-action lawsuits against carmakers, drug companies and the tobacco industry. Under the terms of the Clean Air Act, the Justice Department could impose fines of as much as $37,500 for each recalled vehicle, for a possible total penalty of as much as $18 billion. In spite of Volkwagens effort to redeem itself, French police persisted to search Volkswagen offices in France as a part of an existing investigation. The Paris Prosecutor’s Office requested searches in Volkswagen’s main French office in Villers-Cotterêts northeast of Paris and another office at Roissy near the main Paris airport. The searches were conducted on Friday October 16th, but were not reported until Sunday October 18th. Volkswagen was cooperative in the searches as they confirmed that they have marketed 946,092 vehicles in France that were equipped with the defeat
