Will Lee is the main character in the Will Lee series of seven books by American novelist Stuart Woods. Chiefs, published in 1981 is the first novel in the series that features the Will Lee character. The series of novels by Woods are generally regarded as detective thriller mysteries. Will Lee is a Georgia senator and ex-police chief from capital crimes united who ends up as the president of the United States. The book series begins with the city council of Delano chooses Will Lee a farmer as its police chief. While completely inexperienced as a police officer, Lee is honest and single-minded towards the task in front of him. The first novel, Chiefs begins at a great tempo with Woods keeping the tempo for the entire book. Immediately after Chiefs gets his new appointment as police chief, a body of an unidentified teenager is found in the precinct. While, there is no evidence to suggest that this is a homicide, the body has all the trademarks suggesting a ritual beating. It is now up to the failed cotton farmer turned Delano police chief to crack the case. What follows is a narrative of Will’s obsession in solving a crime that spans the decades from the 1920s to the 60s and three police chiefs that take the mantle from him.
