The author of the book, “The Women of NOW” is Katherine Turk. Turk chose to write this book to inform the readers of the trials women faced and how they combatted injustices with NOW, during the 1970’s. The purpose of the book is to inform readers about the Women’s Rights Movement, the formation of the organization NOW, and to fully share their story. “The Women of Now” is a detailed book that shares women’s struggles and activism in 1960-70, and focuses on the organization of NOW, and the challenges women faced during that time. Katherine Turk was a college student searching for a topic to write about for her senior thesis in history. She came across the past of the organization called NOW. She studied this and discovered that a lot of things she came across did not line up with books written on NOW. She spent “two decades” traveling around the country to find the organization’s archives and talk with past and present members of NOW. Along with that, Turk taught women’s history for over ten years. Turk has studied diligently on and about the NOW organization, has viewed archives from NOW, and interviewed people in the organization, so I believe she is qualified to write this book. It was said to focus on three main women in the beginning and talk about each of them throughout the whole book. Despite this, many women and their backstories were mentioned and as the author jumped around from person to person, it was quite confusing. The book seemed to attempt to be set up as a story, but read similar to a textbook in my own opinion. “The Women of NOW,” is about how the National Organization of Women, NOW, was created, and how NOW fought for women’s rights in the 1970’s. The author mentions events such as boycotts, protests, and marches organized by NOW, meetings for NOW, and the status quo of the time.
