The Yazidis are a fairly small, not too large group of people that reside in Iraq. The majority of them live in Northern Iraq, and around the outskirts of the city of Sinjar. The number of people they have is said to be up to 700,000. They are a Kurdish religious community. They all believe that God is the one creator of the world. Other than that God is the lone creator they have another belief in their religion. They believe that the Peacock Angel is the world ruler. They feel like it can cause both good and bad to individuals and that is based on how their character is in daily life. They are being targeted and hunted and not in a good way. The group that is doing this is ISIS. ISIS is the Islamic State jihadist. In Iraq recently there were a lot of people trapped and most of those people were from the Yazidis religion. At this moment in time the people of Yazidis then faced two options. The first one was that ISIS then made all of the people then flee to the nearest mountain, Mount Sinjar, which is located in the Iraqi north west region. If they did not agree or want to do this then the next option they faced with them was life ending. They would then get slaughtered and killed by the terrorist group, ISIS. Now that the killings have started the only way they can survive is if they make a miraculous escape from them. This is where the Yazidis also kind of turn their hope relying on the United States military to help them overcome ISIS and keep all of their lives. According to the Yazidi religion, God created the world, and the world is protected by seven angels. The chief among the seven angels is Tawuse Melek a.k.a. Melek Taus a.k.a Peacock Angel. According to the Yazidis, the peacock angel was made the leader of the angels after he refused to bow to Adam. Conservative Muslims, however, identify Peacock Angel by another name. Shaitan a.k.a Satan. According to Islam, this was the Jinn (Iblis?) that was cursed for not bowing down to God, thereby falling out of favor and becoming Satan. To add to this, the Yazidis lived in an area around North Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Double whammy. Even the Ottomans, who, by some accounts are known to have been lenient towards minorities tortured, persecuted and nearly wiped out the Yazidi by the mid 19th century. For starters, the Ottomans at worst considered Christians and Jews to be “inferior subjects or as illegitimate denominations" (2).
