In the story The Yellow Wall Paper When Charlotte Perkins mentions, what can she do? She means John is a Physician/man and of authority, therefore what ever he says or believes goes weather she likes it or not. He did not check on her as often as she liked, because he didn't believe she was sick and her mental state was all in her mind. Charlotte knew since John was a Physician and wasn't volunteering to check on her, she couldn't force him, so what can she do? Also getting checked by another physician such as her brother wasn't an option, since it would've been insulting to John. Each time Charlotte described the wall paper she had a different description. She seemed to be obsessed with it, it lead me to believe she had (obsessive-compulsive disorder). At first the wall paper was dull and in some places bright “a sickly sulphur tint in others” seems like the wall paper wasn't consistent in color. However she always seemed to find something different about it each time. Charlotte also was aware that she wasn't normal especially when it came to her perception of the wall paper. “ On a pattern like this, by daylight, there is a lack of sequence, a defiance of law, that is a constant irritant to the normal mind”. She knew it wouldn't bother a normal person at all the way the wall paper looked, in fact they probably wouldn't even notice all the details she did. I believe John loves her, but also he understands she has a mental condition. Maybe the way her condition is treated for others requires aggressive treatment, such as medication, psycho therapy, and he knows that kind of treatment would not keep her well enough for him.
