Their Eyes were watching God In the book Their Eyes were watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, there are many different elements and essential questions used in the novel. In the novel of essential elements is about the idea of family and power, and that is discussed throughout the book. The book tell what role that each character effect the main character Janie, and the plot of the book itself. Then also the book tells about gender roles, such as the relationship between Jody and Janie, and how Janie uses Jody to take her places, but Jody uses her as a person to control. How Jody escaped two failed marriage to what she could be the man for her that makes her feel like an equal and a woman. Janie identity was revealed through her struggles and fight to find a man and to find a sense of respect. Janie all started off different because she grew up around white people. She believed she could do anything she wanted to, but she couldn’t because she was black and back then blacks didn’t have the same rights as others. Though when she founded out this cause of the color of her skin, this made her chase her goal. Though Janie faced a lot of hardship, her grandmother made her marry a man she didn’t love because of stability. Though she could not stand it and ran away with Joe. Though when she was with Joe, he didn’t let her interact with any of the town people. He thought of Janie as being better than the other town people. All of the other town women thought Janie was lucky and look at her as better than them. Though this wasn’t true when Joe died, she had to put to put on an act like she was sad though she was actually to be free and communicate with
