One of the major themes in the novel is the concept of facing the fear and the process of overcoming it. Throughout the novel characters faced many fears to be able to prosper or be successful.
In Dauntless faction learning to face fears is a major part of initiation. they believe that best way to teach courage is through exposure to one’s fear.

In this novel power is all about controlling people and making them do what you want them to do. The want or lust for power can cause damaging effects. Antagonist of this novel Jeanine Matthews is the leader of Erudite faction. She was highly driven by her lust for power which made her cause great level of destruction. She attempted to control the dauntless to overthrow Abnegation from the government. The want for power made her ruthless and cruel. Lust for power can lead to downfall and it brings out worst in people like it did for the dauntless initiates who were driven by their want to gain high position in the rankings. The struggle to gain higher position in ranking or power caused tender person like Al to become violent and then caused him to commit suicide. Power and greed for reaching at the top of the ranking board drove peter to abuse Tris and stab Edward in the eye. Veronica Roth makes sure that readers know how dangerous power can be: it can drive good people to do terrible things. As Mr. Prior warns Tris, a lust for power can lead men into dark and dangerous
