The Grapes of Wrath is a diverse book that contains many different themes throughout. Food availability for families and communities is emphasized in this book often. With families not having enough food to survive and feed their loved ones. This struggle of availability is not just a portrayal of fiction, but was a common problem with many families who actually experienced the dust bowl first-hand. We can use the Grapes of Wrath as an example and a passage to this time period.
In the story, “Grapes of Wrath”, there are several themes that can be easily identified. Among these themes is the concept of food availability and the different factors that emphasize this theme. The characters in the book experience a lack of food to put on the table and watch the crops around them be destroyed by the Dust Bowl. The theme of food availability we can connect this to current events and our modern society. One of the big problems in the world, more specifically the U.S., is our rising problem of low-income family members not being able to provide enough for their own family. America is commonly known for having an abundant food source in our current world. The problem of food availability is still prevalent among these low-income families. The situation from the Dust Bowl is different from what we currently experience though. Some 80 years ago the problem with food was not quality and if families could afford it, the problem was with the abundance of food as a whole.
