Imagine feeling sad and lonely with no friends or family to talk to. Sometimes in life that happens to people and it can be very sorrowful and disappointing, which could later lead to change of behavior. Additionally even the environment that people are living in, not just the people in the environment but the atmosphere. The living conditions on the ranch make working burdensome for the workers on the farm. Some of these aspects of life make an impact on our lives that will always contribute to how we act and behave. In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men the bonds of friendship help people to feel connected but in companionship people can feel lonely.

George and Lennie have this special bond that they want to further create. “O.k someday we’re gonna get this jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’a cow and some pigs(Steinbeck 14)”. Growing up Crooks was never really included in anything, so he didn't really have any friends to grow a bond with. “ You got no right to come in my room. This here’s my room. Nobody got any right in here but me”(Steinbeck 68)”. Crooks grew up not feeling included in things and always being lonely which has caused him to not really be a people person. Crooks doesn't want Lenny to come into his room since the only time he has interactions with people is when they are disrespectful and bully him. Without any kind of companionship can give you a lonely and depressed feeling
