1137 Words5 Pages

Has anyone ever wanted to get revenge on someone who hurt someone else? Many people in different books and in history have committed revenge on someone. In the book, For Real by Alison Cherry, Claire wants revenge for her sister; and in history Dr. Hawley Crippen sought revenge on his wife. These are two different examples of when someone had wanted to get revenge on someone else. Hawley, a doctor accused of killing his wife in 1910, compares to Claire, who planned revenge to help her sister; they both wanted revenge, thought of detailed plans, and accomplished their goals in the end. Hawley and Claire both wanted revenge meant to hurt a person close to them or close to someone they knew. Claire wanted revenge on Samir, her sisters ex-boyfriend, …show more content…

Claire and Miranda tried to figure out what the perfect revenge would be. Claire thought that going on the same game show that Samir was going to be on and beating him on the game show would be the perfect revenge. In the book Claire explains her plan to Miranda, “‘Okay, so, you know that race-around-the-world show Samir’s going to be on? We just saw online that they’re holding emergency auditions for two more teams someone probably failed a drug test at the last minute or something. How awesome would it be if you went on the show and totally kicked his ass?’” (Cherry 29). This quote showed how Claire was nervous about the rejection she might get from her sister, but the need to get revenge overcame that fear. Claire and Miranda went to the auditions as a team of sisters, and got onto the same show Samir was on. Hawley sought his revenge through secretly killing his wife and leaving the country with the women he cheated on Belle with. He found revenge by ordering poison that would fatally sedate Belle, killing her. Hawley’s biography states, “On January 17, 1910, Crippen ordered five grains of the poison hydro-bromide of hyoscine, from a chemist who supplied medications for his dentistry practice. Hyoscine was a drug known for its sedative properties and, at the time, was used in extremely small dosages by doctors to subdue mental patients” (Biography.com Editors). Claire ended up getting eliminated with Samir, because they became a team. This was a success in her mind because Samir had gotten eliminated before Miranda did, Claire sacrificed herself to get revenge. After Claire gets eliminated she says, “‘You messed with me when you messed with her. That’s what loyalty means. But I guess you wouldn’t know anything about that.’ I glance over at Miranda to make sure she’s listening, and she is. ‘After what you did to my sister, she shouldn’t have to look at your smug face for one more second’” (Cherry 277). Miranda and Claire got revenge on Samir, Claire showed her love for her sister and sacrificed her spot on the game to help her sister. After the race was over Miranda had a new respect for Claire because she was so helpful in getting revenge on Samir. The end result of what Hawley wanted did not go exactly to plan. As he was arrested for the murder of Belle, the authorities had found her body in their cellar by the time he was half way to Canada. In the biography it says, “Crippen’s trial for murder commenced on October 18, 1910, and he hampered any hope of building a decent defense, by refusing to allow Ethel to stand as a defense witness. His only concern seemed to be the protection of her reputation” (Biography.com Editors). Hawley’s plan seemed perfect at the time and he did not think that anything wrong could
