Both Richard and Skink demonstrated this theme to the max. They were very determined to find Malley and did anything to find her. Skink risked everything because he could have gotten caught and then there would have been a huge catastrophe. Richard also risked a lot because he could have gotten Skink caught and his mother was almost going to bring the police into finding him. Richard got the police involved immediately even though Malley threatened to tell his parents about what happened in Saint Augustine. Since the police were not doing enough for him and he did what he thought was necessary and went after Malley. In the end Richard ended up finding Malley and saving her. Skink also showed determination when he was defending the loggerhead turtle nests. He was determined to find the poacher and get him to make sure that he would never poach again. Skink caught the poacher and taught him a lesson she would never forget. In both of these instances, the determination is what led the characters to victory and they ended up getting what they wanted because they believed they could and they were determined to execute it. This teaches the reader to never give up no matter what challenges are brought to you even if it is a crocodile stealing your canoe or someone taking the straw that you breathe out of out of your mouth. The adventure and all of the problems that Richard and Skink went on to go find Malley were very interesting and kept me intrigued to keep on reading the book, I am curious to see what Skink does in other novels written by Carl
