Do you think you have the skills to survive in dystopian society? In Cherie Dimaline novel The Marrow Thieves, Indigenous people are being taken by recruiters. They must persevere over the tough times they confront. Various individuals in the novel illustrate qualities which provide assistance in their survival. First, Frenchie shows motivation and courage to help him survive in the dystopia. Along with Wab who shows resourcefulness and resilience that help her survive in dystopia. Finally, Rose shows loyalty and self-control for her survival in the dystopia. Miig has shown his leadership once he joined the group. During the trip to the barn house. Riri had just died and Minerva was depressed. Chi-boy and Miig took turns carrying her, while also trying to find a place to stay for the night. Frenchie narrates “We ran for hours, Chi-boy and Miig taking turns carrying Minerva like a child on their backs while she wailed and sang”(Dimaline 138). Leadership is shown by Miig because he is willing to carry Minerva while protecting the group. He was able to survive in the dystopian future because he stepped up and became a leader. By becoming a leader he made not only a group but a family. One more quality that Miig possesses in order to survive is self-control. Miig shows self-control after Minerva died sacrificing herself to save Miig. The group is now in shock and mourning but Miig is keeping it together. Frenchie explains “We were broken, an almost unrecognizable bunch of mourners held together by habit and grief and a shared history of survival. But we still had Miig, our leader and elder all rolled into one”(Dimaline 213). Self control is shown by Miig because he holds himself together when he loses his close friend. Rose shows loyalty when she opens up to Frenchie on his bed and tells him about her past. Frenchie narrates “She climbed onto my bed, then she began talking about her past.”(Dimaline 70). Loyalty is revealed by Rose because her opening up to Frenchie shows that she trusts him and her loyalty lies with him. This helps her survive this dystopian future because loyalty brought her the group. Rose also possesses self-control. Rose shows self-control when Frenchie starts yelling at her because she's talking to other people. Rose tells Frenchie “you know what French is? You are different. At first, I thought it was because of Riri and Minerva, but now you're even more different here.”(Dimaline 196). Self control is revealed by Rose because Frenchie was losing his mind making things up. Rose may have said a little harsh things, but she said what she needed to say and ended the argument. This quality helped her survive instead of getting into a bigger argument she walked away.
