To begin, Whirligig by Paul Fleischman tells the story of Brent. He ends up killing a young girl named Lea. He has to deal with the consequence of his actions throughout the book. In addition, Whirligig has a strong theme, of everything happens for a reason, that is present throughout the story. First of all, after Lea’s death, her parents asked Brent to make Whirligigs to help keep her spirit alive. Throughout the book Brent makes four Whirligigs, but not only did he learn new things about himself and the world but had discovered a lifelong hobby. To explain, Brent realized that “the guilt hadn’t magically vanished overnight” about Lea’s death. “He knew it would reside in him like the ashes after a fire, unconsumed” and making Whirligigs wouldn’t
