In the novel Caleb’s Wars by David. L Dudley, we meet Caleb, a 15 year old man of honor that works hard, doesn’t tolerate disrespect, and is mad at the world. He has many uprisings as well as downfalls but, no matter what, him and his family always find a way to make it through. Caleb lived with his mother and father at home after his brother was sent to the war to fight off POWS. His father was a working man that hated when the U.S. sent young African American men to fight in the war. Caleb and his father also got into domestic disputes very often because his father believed that there was no better way to teach children their right from wrongs than beating them. Outside of his immediate family, Caleb’s day to day life was alright except for the simple fact that his story took place in the spring and summer of 1944 which meant he dealt with racism everyday in his young adult life. Throughout the summer, though, Caleb’s friends made things flow much easier and took plenty of stress off his back. His friend Henry was a church going young man that enjoyed spending time with his friends. Nathan on the other hand was his crazy best friend that would do anything to make sure that his boys were safe while maintaining a good time. Caleb also discovers that he’s blessed with a gift. Not just any ordinary gift that some people are born with either, but a gift that changes lives! Caleb, the protagonist of Caleb’s Wars by David L. Dudley, and I are alike in many ways. We both share the same view of the world, are viewed by the world in similar ways, and I would respond in a comparable way to the central conflict of the novel.
