When things get difficult people get scared. They tend to give up and stop, letting fear control them. In the book Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, John is faced with many fears. Throughout the story, John is teaching a young slave girl named Sarny how to read and write. As slaves, learning to read and write is considered illegal, which makes learning dangerous.
The small town of Sighet, also known as Sighetu Marmatiei, is located today in Transylvania, Romania. Through the years, Sighet has had strong ties to the Jewish religion, just as it does today. The town has been part of both Romania and Hungary at times, and has seen a decreasing number of residents since 1944. During the 1940s, anti-Jewish sentiment was at its peak, with Adolf Hitler being the face of the anti-Jewish movement. By 1944, World War I had started, and more than 14,000 Jews resided in Sighet, but by the end of May of the same year, none remained, and Sighet was comparable to a ghost town.

Sarny slips up and writes a word in front of the slave master, Waller, can see. Waller blames Sarny, then Mammy until finally, Nightjohn says he taught Sarny. After Nightjohn’s injuries from his punishment, he escapes.

The author communicates many different tones throughout chapter 5. One tone from the beginning of the chapter was anger.
In the book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, he reveals a theme throughout the book of “never take anything for granted.” This theme is shown in may places within the book. For example the text state's,” I swear- if Clel doesn’t stop buying hands we won't have any money left for dresses” (Paulsen 21). Mrs. Waller does not like when her husband Clel buys slaves because that limits the amount of money she will have in order to buy her dresses. This relates to the theme because Mrs. Waller is angry because she wont have enough money to buy dresses, but the slaves are wearing, dirty, ripped, and smelly clothes while she is complaining that she needs more dresses.

Throughout the novel Night, Wiesel portrays many themes and topics so that the reader may better understand the lessons readers can learn from his story. These topics include survival instincts, identity, and faith. The development of these themes helps readers understand the atrocities of the Holocaust and recognize why they must stand up to prevent something like this from happening in the future One of the most continually developed themes Wiesel addresses in Night is faith.
