The short film tackles dark topics and presents them to the viewer through little dialogue and without holding the hand of the viewer to explain these themes. The short film, Twins in Paradise, shows some of the stages of grief. The theme of grief, and how it can affect people in different ways, is portrayed through the characterization of Marcy, Darcy, and the sister’s relationship with each other. The stages of anger and denial, then depression and bargaining, with finally acceptance being the themes that will be looked at. (3:18). This seems to be related to her Mom’s death because she has no one to help her with her emotional regulation. Marcy seems to be trying to control her life through rigorously practicing, and destroying her environment to feel something. VeryWellMinded.com explains “Anger is manifested as a control-seeking behavior and allows us to seek temporary control of our environment by asserting aggression to avoid feelings of helplessness…” (Gupta para 7). Marcy shows this behavior by deciding to listen to the devil part of her conscience and deciding to choose actions that might not be mature and the right thing for her to do. This also shows that her stage of grief is anger because the angel on her shoulder looks like her mother, which in turn implies some anger to her mother for leaving them, as Marcy does not listen to her and does things that would seemingly go against what her mom would want. This has her have some control over her life that she feels like she does not have. Her sister also tries to take control of her life through unhealthy means. Marcy could not understand what Darcy was going through, making her much more aggressive and willing to lash out because her sister did not care about their shared passion. When the girls finally reconnect, Marcy is the one to reach out. She moves through the stages faster than her sister when she was stuck in the beginning stages of grief. Darcy accepts her apology and they reconnect. The stages of grief are very important to this film and how the girls interact with each other. Because of this, the film can show the path to acceptance in the face of death. While they may not be the same after the death of their mother, their relationship is
