The first similarity that I see is the way that the creation of the world is addressed. Both start out with some form of nothingness, in Genesis there is an empty void and in Theogony there was chaos. In genesis god first creates the heavens and the earth. This is shown in Theogony “In the beginning there was only Chaos, the Abyss, But then Gaia, the earth came into being” (Theogony ln. 116-117). Both show the creation of the earth as paramount in creation. Another similarity that I see is in the establishing the role of women. Both of the texts establish reasons for women to be looked down upon, in Genesis this is seen in Eve being the person tricked into eating from the tree of knowledge condemning mankind to a lifetime of pain and sorrow. …show more content…
They are described to be an evil to men because if they don’t marry then they are cursed to have no sons to support him, but it he does marry she can cause him to live with pain in his heart for the rest of his life (Theogony ln. 385-390) The final similarity to bring up is the parallels between the treatment of Atlas and the serpent in Genesis. The serpent is punished for disobeying god in a cruel way that can also be seen in the punishment of Atlas to hold up the sky (Theogony ln. 299). There are two prominent theories of myth seen in these similarities, that of nature myth and charter theory. The first is charter theory and it functions as a way to explain the reasons that women are lower class in society. It makes it easier to accept because it seem that it has always been that way. Nature myth applies well to the creation of the earth and explanations of most major natural phenomenon and works best to encompass most of Theogony as a creation
