Nursing theories greatly influence nursing practices and education. Grand theory and Middle Range theory are the two main subcategories that they fall under. While Grand Theory and Middle Range Theory strive to promote nursing knowledge and patient care, their breadth, abstraction, and practical applicability are very different. Risjord (2019) states that grand theories are broad, abstract frameworks that explain important nursing practice occurrences. Although they cover various nursing care topics, they might not be applicable in some clinical contexts.
The concept of caring incorporates empathy, connection, and the ability to transpose these concepts into compassionate, ethical, sensitive, appropriate care to individuals in their nursing practice (Ray, 2015). CNMU ascertains the four domains of nursing as: Person: An individual is a holistic being that possess intrinsic dignity and worth (New Mexico State University (NMSU), 2013). An individual is part of a family, a community, and the world, and becomes the primary focus of nursing when there is a potential or an actual health care need (ENMU, 2015) Health: Pertains to the holistic aspect of a person (NMSU, 2013). It envelops the persons mind, body, spirit to maintain harmony physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually, and in all moral realms of the holistic aspect of the person (ENMU, 2015).
When thinking about my personal philosophy of nursing the word diversity comes to mind. I myself come from a diverse background. Being Hispanic and living in different parts of the united states I have had the pleasure of experiencing different cultures. As a nurse, I have encountered diverse patient experiences. For example the Chinese elderly woman who would not take her medication or eat.

Within this paper I will examine my personal assumptions, beliefs and values of the four nursing paradigms to develop a personal philosophy of nursing. This philosophy will be aligned with a known nursing theory and the comparisons will be discussed. Section I: Personal Philosophy of Nursing Person
The first concept of the nursing metaparadigm is nursing. My philosophy of nursing recognizes the important role the nurse has to deliver care. It is the therapeutic and mutual relationship between nurse and patient that is “the foundation of nursing practice” (End of life, 2016, p. 4). Nurses must understand how they affect patients because every interaction a nurse has with a patient has an impact on their care.
It is created through analysis of research and construction of concepts and theories (Busso, Poles, & Monteiro da Cruz, 2014). Concept analysis serve a purpose within theory development as it represents continuation of knowledge in nursing profession. When theories and concepts are developed, it must be practiced in a clinical setting to validate research. The caring concept applies to Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring as it creates an environment for healing, bonding, and improving patient outcomes. The concept of caring depicts the attitude of the nurse and the inclination given to meet the needs of the patient from emotional or physical standpoints (Emerson, 2017).
Metaparadigms refers to the set of theories, ideas, propositions, and concepts that initiate a general statement of a particular discipline (Alligood, 2014). The central goal or focus of the nursing profession is to develop the idea of providing different dimensions of care to patients by use of science (Dossey, 2010). To maintain the approach and the spirit among all clients, the aspect of meta-paradigm of nursing was developed and later implemented. The four meta-paradigm of nursing includes the person, health, nursing and the environment (Marriner-Tomey, 1989).

Nurses require years of education and training to obtain the skills necessary to treat their patients, regardless of the branch of nursing they are practicing in. Nursing has dropped its dependence on the medical field and it has grown independent with its models and separate interventions. Many nursing leaders have devised different theories to fit into the nursing field. There are some different nursing theories that encompass the nursing theory. The need theory, unitary human theory, self-care theory, interpersonal theory, transcultural nursing, and from novice to expert theories are all nursing theories.
Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.
