Creon did appalling things in the play Antigone, even causing the death of three different people in his family. However, he is not necessarily heinous. His actions were just following the laws that were already made. Getting rid of the law just because Antigone was the one that broke it would make him look like an awful, cowardly monarch. Running a country is insanely difficult, especially with the events that happened before the events of this play. His actions are justified when there’s a lot at risk. He could have done things better but there was a lot riding on him. An example of his moral ambiguity is shown when he was talking with his son. He tells the blind prophet “Prophets are all a money-getting tribe.” () Creon refuses to listen to Tiresias’ warning. This ends in horrible things happening to him and his family. He may be stubborn and ruthless, but he still thinks that he is doing the right thing for that situation. This is probably the best example of his prideful, stubborn attitude. He may be prideful in this scene, but when the scene is further examined, he is just showing human nature. When people fully believe that they are right, they tend to not want to be told otherwise. Creon may seem appalling in this scene, but it’s somewhat realistic when it is looked at in another point of view. The last, and presumably best display of his moral ambiguity is at the very end of the play, after his wife commits suicide. He declares “I am the guilty cause. I did the deed,/ Thy murderer. Yea, I guilty plead./ My henchmen, lead me hence, away, away,/ A cipher, less than nothing; no delay!” () He feels extreme guilt for the deaths of his son, wife, and niece. He realizes his wicked actions in the end. He feels strong remorse for what he has done and somebody that was pure evil would never do that. This makes it clear cut that he is morally
