Entwisle 4 The poem “There is a flower that Bees prefer”, by Emily Dickinson, studies the independence of the flower. The speaker sets a rhythm of iambic (tetrameter) followed by iambic trimeter. Thought the poem Dickinson speaks about a specific kind of flower that is indifferent to its surroundings. The words used to describe the flower are one that are commonly used to talk about people and their characteristics. The flower is described more precisely, saying that it is one that does not wait for the spring to come but blooms before. The impatience of people is shown through the idea that the flower is choosing to spring, which we can tell from “she doth not wait for June—”(13), rather than doing it by chance. Therefore the flower is more than the other flowers because it chooses to be first. This translates directly to the idea of people as flowers because people must choose to be first and to work to be better. The idea of the flower blooming before the summer time is not an easy one, since there are then more obstacles to endure. The flower’s “sturdy little countenance”(15), shows the strength of the flower, that despite the challenges that it must endure, in this case spring wind storms, it still makes the decision that helps it prevail and stand out. Humans, therefore, should act in similar ways. Despite the obstacles that you might face, if you start before or if you work hard, then, like the flower you are bound to succeed and to grow. In the last line of the stanza, Dickinson includes the phrase “be seen—“(16). This is to show that someone will always be watching and observing, however the flower is acting independently of this. Dickinson is commenting on how we should not worry about how people view
